I've come across research and articles about the bad effects of following the news many times over the last couple of years. Many doctors, in handling with people with severe stress, actually forbids them to watch or read any kinds of news to give them a chance to recover. Reading or hearing about catastrophies, living beings suffering or cruelty, naturally creates a stress response in our bodies, causing inflammation if it does not get an outlet. (That is, if we haven't become completely numbed and don't react at all at witnessing suffering, which I think is even worse.)

It is one thing to read or learn about people suffering in, for example, a war zone, and then going there, starting a charity or starting a debate to affect politicians, in order to help the people in need. That can actually be very good for your own individual health as well. But, taking it all in, absorbing, and not doing anything about it, can be really toxic for you. And it's not going to make the world a better place either.

The other problem with the news, as I see it, is that it is not reflecting the world as it is today. There are millions of positive news everyday, every second, miracles even, that we never get to hear about them watching the news. News focus on the negative, the problematic and, depending on what sources of information you rely on, you will get very different information depending on what angle the media wants to take and what might create enough sensation to sell as many newspapers as possible.

So, I've stopped consuming news by everyday watching it or reading the newspaper (I don't shut my eyes or cover my ears everytime it comes on but I don't focus my energy on it either.) I give my attention to charity work instead and I fill myself with positive news to enable myself to be a light worker and make the world a little more amazing than it already is, everyday. And if I, for the sake of my work, need to read in on the mainstream news, I take responsibility for making sure that I get the information I need from different angles, keeping a critical approach to the information I get. And, guess what, I haven't missed out on anything (that I know of at least) and I find it much easier to be a positive person and to spread positive news to my surroundings.

If you want to still keep up with the news, I encourage you to get a little balance by also reading sites as Good News Magazine for example, which focuses on all the good that is happening everyday, everywhere.

With all my love, Helena
